Facebook Manager Onboarding: A simulator to train managers to have better conversations

Project Overview

Facebook hires thousands of managers over the years. In order to maintain consistency of culture across such a large company it is important that they be onboarded with materials that are robust and highly adaptable to the circumstances that they would face in their job. In this project, we were given the task of designing a simulator through which managers could have a conversation about topics such as employee’s careers, giving and seeking feedback, promotion goals and others. A major constraint of this experience was that it had to asynchronous— meaning a person has to be able to begin and go through this simulation without it requiring the presence of a conversation partner or a facilitator.

THE OBJECTIVE

How do we teach people how to have conversations about difficult topics through a simulated experience that feels organic and as life-like as possible?
